Suffolk is a county with lots of places to enjoy, explore and discover. It has beautiful countryside with quaint cottages and historic villages with old Saxon names.
For those looking for a seaside break, Lowestoft is the largest resort and has two blue flag beaches in addition to other family attractions. Further down the coast is the fishing village of Aldeburgh, probably best known for it's classical music festival that was started by the renowned composer Benjamin Britten who lived there. Southwold is another popular seaside resort that has a good sandy beach and a relaxed atmosphere. It has a small pier, a theatre and a number of restaurants, bars and craft shops. Southwold is distinctive for having a lighthouse amongst the houses and is also home to the Adnams brewery that offers guided tours.
Suffolk also has beautiful countryside. This includes the area around Beccles and Oulton Broad, which is the beginning of the Norfolk Broads and a popular area for boating. Further inland is the Brecks and Thetford forest, a pretty area of pine trees. The market town of Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, the county town are also worth visiting and have a fine selection of shops, restaurants and other interesting buildings.
The area in the south of Suffolk and parts of Essex is sometimes known as Constable country, as it was beautifully portrayed in the paintings of John Constable, the Victorian painter who painted the fields and other rural landscapes. The countryside is still largely unspoilt, so if you are looking for a relaxing rural escape to recharge your batteries, Suffolk is a good destination.
